David Bain: New Zealand: 'The government has ordered a fresh inquiry. into the compensation issue. Publisher's view. This sends a very ugly message far beyond New Zealand's borders. A very ugly message indeed. HL;

PUBLISHER'S VIEW: (Editorial): This decision to order a fresh inquiry into compensation for David Bain is nothing less than disgraceful. The government had been provided a thorough, incisive report by former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Ian Binnie which was met by a malicious, groundless attack. Justice Binnie gave the government everything it needs to decide that generous compensation is warranted for the ordeal the government and its representatives put Bain through - and the years it took away from his life. The decision to go back to square one sends an ugly message that is resonating far beyond New Zealand's borders.  "Justice be damned. The fix is in."

STORY: "David Bain's compensation case gets fresh inquiry," published by Stuff.co on February 19, 2015.

SUB-HEADING: "Justice Minister Amy Adams has ordered a new inquiry into David Bain's compensation claim."

GIST: "Cabinet will go back to square one on the David Bain compensation case, commissioning a fresh inquiry into the matter. A 2012 report by former Canadian Supreme Court judge Justice Ian Binnie, which found Bain was innocent on the balance of probabilities, was rejected by ex-Justice Minister Judith Collins, sparking court action by Bain's legal team. Collins' successor Amy Adams said Cabinet does not have the information to "reasonably" make a decision. She has asked for the new report and says it is important "the final decision on Mr Bain's claim is durable and withstands the close scrutiny the case attracts."
No-one has been appointed to head the inquiry yet."
