CHARLES SMITH; WAUDBY CASE IS SUBJECT OF GLOBAL TV DOCUMENTARY TO AIR ON MAY 6. A WORK OF RENOWNED CANADIAN INVESTiGATIVE JOURNALIST JULIAN SHER;

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: The following article which appeared in "Peterborough this week," is about "A Mother's Ordeal," one of two documentaries by renowned Canadian investigative journalist Julian Sher which are about people wrongly accused of killing their children. Brenda Waudby's suffered her ordeal as a result of the faulty opinion of former Dr. Charles Smith, the namesake of this Blog. It airs on Friday May, 6, 2011. The second documentary, is called "Execution Under Fire," deals with the Cameron Todd Willingham case. It airs on Global TV on Friday May 13, 2011. The Willingham case, which has also been of great interest to this Blog, involves the execution of an innocent man on the basis of junk science in the form of so-called "arson evidence." I will be posting more content on this important documentary series over the next several weeks.

Brenda Waudby's life has been well-documented as she cleared her name in her daughter Jenna's death. Now a summary of her story will air on Global TV on May 6.

Here is the synopsis provided by the network:

A MOTHER’S ORDEAL - When Brenda Waudby of Peterborough, was suspected of the 1997 beating death of her 21 month-old daughter Jenna it seemed like a closed case. A former drug addict on welfare, Waudby was an easy target. Relying on faulty autopsy analysis provided by child forensic pathologist Charles Smith, police arrested her on murder charges. Waudby’s life was shattered and her surviving children were taken away. It took eight years before Waudby was found innocent and the horrifying truth about Jenna’s death came to light. Dr Smith, whose incompetence led to countless wrongful convictions, has subsequently had his medical license revoked.

Ms Waudby was interviewed by investigative journalist Julian Sher and his research team, including a segment shot of her working at her job at Peterborough This Week.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: The Toronto Star, my previous employer for more than twenty incredible years, has put considerable effort into exposing the harm caused by Dr. Charles Smith and his protectors - and into pushing for reform of Ontario's forensic pediatric pathology system. The Star has a "topic" section which focuses on recent stories related to Dr. Charles Smith. It can be found at:
